USAA is cheaper overall, but State Farm estimates are fairly similar after one speeding ticket or crash. Drivers with USAA insurance pay 1% less after discharge and 3% less after a negligent accident than drivers who choose State Farm.

Young drivers can also find cheaper car insurance at USAA than at State Farm.
On average, 18-year-old drivers can expect a 27% discount on USAA insurance. This is the difference between $482/year for minimum coverage and $789/year for full coverage.

Younger drivers with speeding tickets or erroneous accidents may also receive lower rates from USAA. USAA’s minimum coverage policy is 28% cheaper than State Farm’s equivalent coverage for these drivers.

USAA generally has lower rates than State Farm, but there are some states where drivers can find cheaper products at State Farm.

Of the 42 states for which data is available from both insurers, USAA offers lower rates in 27 states while State Farm offers lower rates in 15 states. $2,383 less per year than State Farm. State Farm, on the other hand, is $592 less per year than Pennsylvania’s USAA.

State Farm car insurance coverage options
As two of the biggest insurers in the country, USAA and State Farm offer all the basic coverages you would typically see in an auto insurance policy. In addition, both insurers have a number of common coverage add-ons, like roadside assistance, rental car reimbursement and rideshare insurance.

Two main differences between the coverages available are State Farm’s nonowners insurance and USAA’s car replacement insurance.

State Farm only offers one type of coverage not available from USAA: nonowners insurance. This coverage protects drivers who don’t own a vehicle but borrow a car often to drive, or drivers who need to file an SR-22 without a vehicle.
